About P&M Automotive

History

The current P&M Automotive operation is based on a strong history of pride in the way we provide quality service to our customers at a fair price.  As a customer we want you to realize a commitment to excellence that has made P&M Automotive a leader in automotive service.

Started in 1975 owners Byron and Bonnie Anderson purchased Partie McPhearson Auto Service on the corner of State and Lancaster.  Byron graduated from Denver Automotive and Diesel College in 1974 with a dream of owning a large automotive repair facility.  With one technician and one tow truck driver Byron kept busy doing everything necessary to keep the business afloat.

In 1978 the current property was purchased on Lancaster Drive and the first phase of the current facility, the front shop, was finished and we moved in on May 1, 1981.  With the fast pace of growth the 2nd phase, the rear shop, was completed in 1984.   By this time we had 3 technicians and one tow truck operator.

In 1986 we became the service and towing contractor for AAA of Oregon/Idaho for the Salem and surrounding areas.  We added two new trucks to bring our fleet to five trucks and two service vehicles.  In 1987 AAA Oregon/Idaho began a new program which certified automotive repair shops in an effort to improve the quality of service provided to AAA membership.  This membership was restricted to a small number of repair facilities which are required to maintain extremely high standards of service, we were proud to be the very first AAA Approved Auto Repair facility in the state of Oregon.

In the 90’s we continued to grow and trained our staff so we could provide better customer service.  In 1991 the property to our south was purchased and improved which added needed parking and storage areas.  We were proud to have received the “Best of Salem” award by the Statesman Journal Readers in January 1996 and "Best of the Mid-Valley" in 2009 and again in 2010.  P&M Automotive was pleased to be approved as a Napa Auto Care Center in 1996 and to be able to take advantage of their training and extended warranty programs still trying to improve our customer service.  By 1998 our staff then increased to 25 employees having over 250 combined years of experience in the automotive repair and towing industry.  The towing department required additional service vehicles increasing our fleet to 10 tow trucks and 3 service vehicles.

In 2000 planning began on an additional expansion project as we needed more space.  Along with our facility needing to be updated, we were still running with only one office.  Construction began early 2001 with the first step being the addition of eight more work stalls to be able to maintain working areas during the duration of the extensive remodel.  We included work space and large hoists to accommodate motor homes and trucks.  The new addition took approximately 7 months and needed to be finished before any remodeling work began on the front building.  When work was completed on the new building we had to totally demolish the interior of the existing front building.  Work progressed for the next 18 months bringing the repair facility to 20 work bays along with adding 5 offices, a larger customer reception entrance, a better service advisor area and a large employee lounge with full kitchen and shower.

To finish the remodels new look we decided to add something that no one else has done by engineering and constructing a full scale NASCAR rotating on the roof of the shop, thanks to Bill McAnally Racing (BMR).

We believe if we are to provide the best quality of service to our valued customers we also need to provide the best working conditions for the staff of P&M Automotive.  We are pleased to have over 27 employees with some being here over 20 years with an  average employment stay of over 5 years.  My wife and I are very proud to have given out our 10 year ring 10 times to exceptional people that we have come to admire, their commitment to our customers and the company can not be put into words.

We are proud of our staff’s commitment to our valued customers and would hope you would give us a chance to prove it.

Byron and Bonnie Anderson

My husband and I recommended my daughter who took her Cadillac in for an inspection due to a starter problem. She was told that it would cost about $600.00 for a new starter by the dealer, an amount she just could not afford unless a new starter was absolutely necessary. The staff attempted to get the starter to NOT work while they were diagnosing the problem. Funny thing, every time they attempted to start the vehicle it would start. I guess the tech had the magic touch. We commend the staff about their policy of honesty and being up front with their customers. It is so refreshing to have a business conduct itself as they have demonstrated. She could bear the $40.00 diagnostic charge and is so grateful that she did not have to dish out $600.00. My husband and I have been customers in the past when we had trouble with our vehicles P&M Automotive has always treated us fairly and that is why we recommended them. Please keep up the great work and we will be sure to recommend you to others in the future.

I took my older vehicle to P&M because the check engine light kept coming on. They were very efficient and discovered an old service bulletin that had not been addressed on my car. Then they explained the issue, the repair, and what I could expect for time and money to complete it. Everything was just as they had explained. The repair not only kept the light from coming back on, but helped the engine run smoother. I will certainly return to them whenever another issue presents itself.
